Cecil J. Edmonds (born October 26, 1889 – died June 11, 1979) was a British official who worked in different parts of the Middle East. He was like a special diplomat or administrator for the British government. He served with British forces in places like Mesopotamia (which is now Iraq) and Persia (now Iran). Later, he helped manage the government in Iraq.

Early Life and Education

Cecil was born in Japan and lived there until he was eight years old. His parents were Rev. Walter and Laura Edmond. He went to school at Bedford School and Christ's Hospital in England. After that, he studied at Pembroke College at Cambridge.

Work in the Middle East

From 1935 to 1945, Cecil Edmonds worked as an advisor to the Ministry of Interior in Iraq. This meant he helped the Iraqi government with its internal affairs.

Edmonds wrote a famous book called Kurds, Turks, and Arabs: Politics, Travel and Research in North-Eastern Iraq, 1919-1925. In this book, he shared his observations and experiences from his time as a political officer in Iraqi Kurdistan between 1920 and 1925. The book gives detailed information about the social and political situations, important people, and local customs in the areas where he worked.

Cecil Edmonds was very interested in the different religious groups he met while working in Kurdistan. He had studied the cultures and languages of the Middle East, which is called being an Orientalist. This background helped him learn a lot about the Kurds when he was working for the British Administration in Iraq.
