Cecil Roberts (born May 18, 1892 – died December 20, 1976) was an English writer. He was a journalist, a poet, a playwright, and a novelist. Cecil Roberts grew up in Nottingham, England.

Cecil Roberts' Career

Cecil Roberts started his writing journey early. He published his first book of poems in 1913. His first novel, Scissors, came out in 1923. By the 1930s, Roberts was a very popular author. His books were translated into 12 different languages.

He worked as a journalist for the Liverpool Post during the First World War. First, he was an editor for books and literature. Later, he became a war correspondent, reporting from the war zones. From 1920, he edited the daily Nottingham Journal for five years. In 1922, he tried to become a member of Parliament for the Liberal Party. In the 1930s, he wrote reviews about books for a newspaper called The Sphere.

During the Second World War, Roberts worked for Lord Halifax. Lord Halifax was the UK Ambassador to the United States.

Even though he wrote many books and was popular during his lifetime, his writings are not well-known today. Some people have said his novels had simple plots. They also felt the characters were not very deep. They thought his books often included too much travel writing.

Cecil Roberts' Life

Roberts once said that when he became an adult, he made a list of goals for the next 15 years. These goals included becoming a successful novelist. He also wanted to be a member of Parliament. He hoped to own a large country house and a small home in London. He also wanted to get married and have two sons and a daughter. He achieved some of these goals, but not all of them.

In the early 1950s, Roberts moved to Italy. He lived in Alassio for a while. Then, he lived for many years in the Grand Hotel in Rome. In 1966, he received the Italian Gold Medal. This was a special award from Italy. In 1975, he gave his important papers to Churchill College, Cambridge. He passed away in Rome in 1976.
