Cecilia of Normandy (also known as Cecily; born around 1056, died July 30, 1126) was an important French abbess. She is believed to be the oldest daughter of William the Conqueror, the famous king who conquered England, and his wife, Matilda of Flanders.

Who Was Cecilia?

Cecilia was a princess, but she lived a different life than many royal children. She was the sister of two future kings of England: William II and Henry I of England. She was also very close to her other brother, Robert Curthose.

Cecilia received an excellent education. She learned about the arts, Latin, public speaking (rhetoric), and logic. Her teacher was a famous scholar named Arnulf of Chocques. This kind of education was very special for a girl in her time.

Life in the Convent

When Cecilia was young, her parents sent her to live at the Abbey of the Holy Trinity of Caen. This abbey was a special religious community for women. Her mother, Queen Matilda, had founded it.

Giving a child to the church was a common practice for noble families back then. It was a way to show devotion and secure a good future for a daughter. Noblewomen in convents often had a comfortable life. They could have their own living space and even receive visitors. This was sometimes more freedom than other unmarried noblewomen had.

After joining the convent, Cecilia was taught by the abbess, who was also named Matilda.

A Visit from Her Brother

In the year 1100, Cecilia received a special visit from her brother, Robert Curthose. He had just returned from the First Crusade, a major religious war. Robert brought a unique gift for Cecilia and her abbey: a captured banner from the Saracens (a term used for Muslims at the time). This was a very exciting event for the convent.

Cecilia's Career as an Abbess

Cecilia had a very successful career at the convent. She was likely the only one of her parents' children to be at her mother's funeral in 1083. This is because the funeral took place right there in her convent.

Cecilia made many improvements to the abbey. She worked as a coadjutor, which means she was like a deputy or assistant to the abbess. In 1112, she took over as the main leader, becoming the Abbess of the Abbey of Sainte-Trinité in Caen.

Her good leadership and character were praised by important people. Baldric of Dol, an archbishop, and the poet Hildebert of Le Mans both spoke highly of her. Hildebert even called her "a queen, a goddess and a royal virgin, who married a heavenly husband." This shows how respected she was.

Her Final Resting Place

Cecilia passed away on July 30, 1126, in Caen, France. She was buried within the walls of her beloved abbey. Her tomb is sealed up, so it cannot be easily found today. Her famous father, William the Conqueror, was also buried in Caen.
