Early Life and Education
After finishing high school in Chicago, Illinois, Cedrick Frazier moved to Minnesota. He attended the University of Minnesota-Morris. There, he played NCAA football and ran track. He earned a B.A. degree in psychology.
Frazier then went to Minnesota State University, Mankato. He earned a M.A. in urban studies. This degree focused on how to manage local governments. During this time, he also worked as a fellow with the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Later, Frazier studied law at William Mitchell College of Law. While in law school, he worked for the Hennepin County Public Defender's Office. He also worked for the League of Minnesota Cities. After getting his law degree and passing the bar exam, he became a public defender in Hennepin County.
In 2008, Frazier became the Director of Equity and Diversity for the Minneapolis Public Schools. He was later promoted to legal counsel for the school district. After eight years in public education, he joined the legal team at Education Minnesota. This is the largest labor union in the state.
New Hope City Council
In August 2018, Cedrick Frazier was chosen to join the New Hope City Council. He took the place of Erik Lammle. Before this, Frazier was on the city's Planning Commission. He was sworn in on September 10, 2018. He became the first African American to serve on the New Hope City Council.
While on the council, Frazier worked to improve communication. He encouraged talks between the city's Human Rights Commission and the police department. These discussions focused on police practices. He also suggested new rules to help protect people living in affordable housing.
Minnesota House of Representatives
Frazier was first elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2020. He took over from Lyndon Carlson, who had served for a long time.
Working in the House
On January 1, 2021, Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman made Frazier the vice chair of the House Public Safety Committee.
Frazier has worked to improve public safety and the justice system in Minnesota. He was a key negotiator for the state's $52 billion budget. This helped prevent a government shutdown. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said Frazier helped keep police reform a top priority.
In July 2021, Speaker Hortman asked Frazier to join a special group. This group decided how to use $250 million. This money was from federal funds to help frontline workers. Frazier also wrote a bill called the Essential Workers Emergency Leave Act. This bill aimed to give paid sick leave to workers who didn't get it from other federal programs.
In September 2021, the Hennepin County Attorney announced his retirement. Many people thought Frazier might run for the position. However, Frazier decided that 2022 was not the right time for him to run. He later supported Mary Moriarty for the role.
In December 2022, Frazier was elected co-chair of the Minnesota House People of Color and Indigenous (POCI) Caucus. He shared this role with Representative Esther Agbaje.
