Celestino Gorostiza Alcalá (born January 31, 1904, in Villahermosa – died January 11, 1967, in Mexico City) was an important Mexican writer and director. He created plays for the theater and scripts for movies. He was known as a playwright, director, and dramatist.

His Life Story

Celestino Gorostiza was the older brother of another famous writer, José Gorostiza. Their parents were Celestino Gorostiza and Elvira Alcalá de Gorostiza.

Celestino helped start two important theater groups in Mexico City. He co-founded the Ulises theater group (active from 1927 to 1928). Later, he also helped create the Orientación theater group in 1932.

He was married to Araceli Otero Mena. Araceli was the older sister of Clementina Otero, who was also involved in theater. Celestino and Araceli had a daughter named Paloma Gorostiza Otero.

Gorostiza was a respected member of the Academia Mexicana de la Lengua. This is a group that studies and protects the Spanish language in Mexico. He was also part of the Academia Mexicana de Artes y Ciencias Cinematográficas, which focuses on Mexican movies. He even directed the theater department at the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes. This is a major arts institution in Mexico.

In 2004, to celebrate 100 years since his birth, Mexico released a special 7 Mex$ postage stamp in his honor.
