Cengiz Bektaş (born November 26, 1934 – died March 20, 2020) was a famous Turkish architect, engineer, poet, and writer. He designed many important buildings and also wrote for the Evrensel newspaper.

Learning to Be an Architect

Cengiz Bektaş was born in Denizli, a city in Turkey. He studied architecture at the Istanbul State Academy of the Fine Arts. In 1959, he graduated from the Technical University of Munich in Germany. After his studies, he taught at different universities. He taught in both Germany and Turkey, including the well-known Middle East Technical University.

His Career as an Architect

From 1959 to 1962, Bektaş worked as a freelance architect in Munich, Germany. This means he worked for himself on different projects. In 1962, the Middle East Technical University in Ankara asked him to be a teacher. He accepted this offer and taught there for some time.

Since 1963, Cengiz Bektaş had his own architecture office. He also continued to give lectures at universities. He shared his knowledge and ideas with many students.

  • Bakırköy International Industrial Bank, Istanbul (1988) – A bank building.
  • Ayfer Yağcı Bazaar, Balıkesir (1989) – Another marketplace.
  • Library/Esin Aksoy House, Istanbul (1989) – A building combining a library and a home.
  • Büyükada Turkish-Swedish Cultural House, Istanbul (1989) – A center for cultural exchange.
  • Fe-Farma Medical Supplies Factory, Elazığ (1990) – A factory for medical products.
  • Akdeniz University Olbia Social Center, Antalya (1999) – A social center at a university. This project won an award from the Aga Khan Award for Architecture.
  • Aphrodisias Oct Museum, Aydın (2007) – A museum for art and history.
