A Look Back: Center Point's History
In the mid-1850s, Center Point began as an important trading spot. It was located between several growing towns like Comfort, Kerrville, Bandera, and Fredericksburg.
How Center Point Got Its Name
The first post office opened here on November 25, 1859. It was named Zanzenberg, after the family home of the town's founder, Charles Ganahl. The post office moved in 1872 to the south side of the Guadalupe River. When it reopened, it was renamed Center Point. This new name came from its central location on the main trade routes.
Growing Up in Center Point
Many early settlers came from western Tennessee. They moved to the banks of the Guadalupe River to make Center Point their new home. The first child born in Center Point was Daniel C. Nowlin, on September 1, 1857. He grew up to be a surveyor in Kerr County and later a sheep rancher in Wyoming.
People in Center Point tried to make it an official city several times. The first attempt was in 1889, mainly for school reasons. In 1913, they voted to become an incorporated city again. They even chose a mayor and other leaders. But just a few months later, they voted to stop being a city.
Center Point is still one of the largest unincorporated communities in Texas today. This means it's a big place without its own city government.
