Center Star is a small, unincorporated community in Lauderdale County, Alabama. It is also known as Centre Star or simply Centre. Before the American Civil War, it was often called Centre. Being an unincorporated community means it is not an official city or town. Instead, it is a collection of homes and businesses without its own local government.

History of Center Star

Center Star is one of the oldest communities in Lauderdale County. Long ago, the land was claimed by both the Chickasaw and Cherokee Native American tribes.

Early Community Life

In June 1818, the very first Methodist congregation in Lauderdale County started near Center Star. This shows how important faith was to the early settlers.

A post office opened in Center Star on April 15, 1850. It was named "Center Star" because of its central spot on a special "star route." This was a postal route served by a private company. The post office operated until 1902 and then reopened for just one year in 1914.

Center Star and the Civil War

During the American Civil War, Center Star played a small part. On May 26, 1861, a group called the "Calhoun Guards" was formed here by Edward A. O'Neal. This group later became part of the 9th Regiment Alabama Infantry.

A battle also took place near Center Star on May 9, 1864. Colonel William A. Johnson's 4th Alabama Cavalry fought against Union soldiers. These Union troops included the 7th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment and the 9th Ohio Infantry. They were led by Colonel Richard Rowett.
