Cerrillos, also known as Los Cerrillos, is a small city located in the western part of the Canelones Department in southern Uruguay. It's a quiet place with a rich history.

The name Cerrillos also refers to the area around the city, called a municipality. This municipality was officially created on March 15, 2010. It includes the city of Cerrillos and other nearby towns like Campo Militar, Sofía Santos, Las Brujas, and Parador Tajes.

The city of Cerrillos is easy to find on a map. It sits right where two important roads meet: Route 36 and Route 46.

It's about 16 kilometers (10 miles) southwest of the city of Canelones. It's also about 40 kilometers (25 miles) northwest of the center of Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay.

How Cerrillos Grew Over Time

Cerrillos was founded on August 3, 1896. It started as a small settlement.

Over the years, it grew bigger and more important. Here's how its official status changed:

  • On July 5, 1907, it became a "Pueblo," which means a village.
  • Then, on October 23, 1958, it was upgraded to a "Villa," a larger town.
  • Finally, on July 20, 1971, Cerrillos officially became a "Ciudad," or a city.

In 2011, a count showed that 2,508 people lived in the city of Cerrillos.

The local government, called the Intendencia de Canelones, estimated that the entire municipality of Cerrillos had about 7,369 people living in it during the 2010 elections.
