What Makes Cerro Tacarcuna Special?

The tropical forests on Cerro Tacarcuna are amazing! They are known for having a huge variety of plants and animals. Many of these species are endemic, meaning they are found only in this special area and nowhere else in the world.

These important forests are protected by two national parks. On the Panama side, it's the Darién National Park. On the Colombian side, it's the Los Katíos National Park. These parks help keep the unique nature safe.

Cerro Tacarcuna in Kuna Culture

For the Kuna people, who live in this region, Cerro Tacarcuna is a very important place. They call it Dakarkunyala in their language. According to their old stories, this mountain is where their people first came from. From here, they spread out across the Darién region and to the San Blas islands in the Caribbean Sea.
