The Serranía del Darién is a mountain range found right on the border between Colombia and Panamá. It's part of a special area known as the Darién Gap. These mountains are located in southeastern Panamá (in the Darién Province) and northwestern Colombia (in the Chocó Department).
This region is home to two important protected areas. These are Darién National Park in Panamá and Los Katíos National Park in Colombia. The mountains here are not very crowded. On average, only about two people live in each square kilometer. This means it's a very wild and natural place. The average height of these mountains above sea level is about 437 meters.

Natural Challenges in the Mountains
The Serranía del Darién area can experience strong natural events. Earthquakes measuring between 6 and 7 on the scale happen here about every 50 years. This region also faces risks from floods and landslides. These events are considered to be medium to high intensity challenges for the area.

The Serranía del Darién is a very wet place. It has a tropical monsoon climate. This means it gets a lot of rain, especially during certain times of the year. The air is often humid, making it feel warm and moist.
Amazing Plants and Animals
This mountain range is home to many unique living things. Some species are endemic here, which means they are found nowhere else in the world. One example is a type of toad called Rhinella acrolopha. Scientists continue to study the diverse plants and animals that live in this special rainforest environment.
