Cerro Vicuñas is a tall volcano in the Andes mountains of Chile. It stands just north of another famous peak, Ojos del Salado. This mountain reaches a height of 6,067 meters (about 19,905 feet) above sea level.
Many climbers use Cerro Vicuñas to get used to the high altitude before trying to climb even taller mountains like Ojos del Salado. The mountain is located within the area of Copiapo, a city in Chile.
How Tall is Cerro Vicuñas?
Cerro Vicuñas is 6,067 meters (19,905 feet) high. This makes it one of the very tall mountains in the Andes.
Scientists use different ways to measure mountain heights. For Cerro Vicuñas, some measurements show slightly different numbers. For example, one method called SRTM measured it at 6,063 meters. Another, ASTER, found it to be 6,041 meters. A third method, TanDEM-X, measured it at 6,109 meters.
The mountain's topographic prominence is 726 meters. This means it rises 726 meters above the lowest point connecting it to a higher mountain. Its "parent peak" (the closest higher mountain) is Barrancas Blancas.
First People to Climb It
The first recorded climb of Cerro Vicuñas happened on January 23, 1979. Two climbers, Eduardo Saavedra Larraín from Chile and Theo Dowbenka from Austria, were the first to reach its summit.
