His Life as a Royal Doctor
Cesare Adelmare studied arts and medicine at the University of Padua in Italy. Around 1550, he moved to England and started working as a doctor in London.
In 1554, he became a member of the College of Physicians, which is a group for doctors. He even became a "censor" the next year, meaning he helped make sure doctors followed the rules.
Working for the Queens
Cesare Adelmare became a medical adviser to Queen Mary I. She gave him special permission to live in England without paying certain taxes in 1558. Once, she even paid him a very large fee of £100 for just one visit!
After Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth I also asked for his medical advice. She rewarded him by letting him rent church lands at a lower price than usual.
Later Life and Home
In 1561, Cesare Adelmare bought a house in Bishopsgate, London. This house used to be part of an old religious building called the Priory of St. Helen's. He lived there until he passed away in 1569. He was buried at the church of Great St. Helens.

Cesare Adelmare's father was Pietro Maria Adelmare, a lawyer from Treviso, near Venice in Italy. His mother was Paola.
His wife was Margaret Perient or Perrin (who passed away around 1583). The name "Caesar," which the queens often used for him, became the last name for his children.
Cesare's Children
Cesare and Margaret had several children who became notable in their own right:
- His oldest son, Sir Julius Caesar (1557/1558 – 1636), became an important judge and statesman. He was born in Tottenham and baptized in London.
- His second son, Sir Thomas Caesar (1561 – 1610), became a Baron of the Exchequer, a type of judge.
- His son Charles (born 1561) was a soldier.
- His son William was a merchant who traveled in the Mediterranean Sea. He disappeared after a shipwreck between 1586 and 1591.
- His youngest son, Henry Caesar (1564 – 1636), became the Dean of Ely, a high position in the church.
- His daughter Margaret married Nicholas Wright.
- His daughter Anne married Damian Peck.
- His daughter Elizabeth married John Hunt.
After Cesare Adelmare died, his wife Margaret married Michael Lok.
