About Chaney Glacier
Chaney Glacier is one of several glaciers that scientists are watching very closely. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has a special program called Glacier Monitoring Research. They study how much ice glaciers are gaining or losing, which is called their mass balance.
How Scientists Study Chaney Glacier
Scientists use special tools to keep an eye on Chaney Glacier. They use remote sensing equipment, which means they can gather information from a distance. They also use a method called repeat photography. This is where they take pictures of the glacier from the exact same spots over many years. By comparing these photos, they can see how much the glacier has changed.
Why Chaney Glacier is Shrinking
Since 1911, Chaney Glacier has gotten much smaller. Between 1966 and 2005, the glacier lost more than 29 percent of its surface area. This means a big chunk of its ice melted away. The pictures below show just how much the glacier has changed over the years.
