Chantal David is a brilliant French Canadian mathematician. She was born in 1964. Today, she is a professor of mathematics at Concordia University.

Professor David loves to explore different areas of math. Her main interests include analytic number theory, which is about understanding numbers using tools from analysis. She also studies arithmetic statistics and random matrix theory. She has done important work on elliptic curves and Drinfeld modules.

In 2013, Chantal David won the Krieger–Nelson Prize. This award is given every year by the Canadian Mathematical Society. It celebrates amazing female mathematicians in Canada.

Becoming a Mathematician: Chantal David's Journey

Chantal David worked hard to become a mathematician. She earned her highest degree, a doctorate, in 1993. She studied mathematics at McGill University.

Her special project for her doctorate was called Supersingular Drinfeld Modules. Her teacher, Ram Murty, helped her a lot with this work.

Starting Her Career at Concordia University

After finishing her studies, Chantal David joined the team at Concordia University. This was in the same year she earned her doctorate, 1993. She started teaching and doing research there.

In 2004, she took on an important role. She became the deputy director of the Centre de Recherches Mathématiques. This center helps mathematicians work together on new ideas.

Visiting Other Universities and Institutes

Professor David has been invited to teach and research at many places. In 2008, she was a visiting professor at Université Henri Poincaré in France.

She also spent time at the Institute for Advanced Study. This famous place in the United States is where many smart scientists and mathematicians go to think and work. She was there from September 2009 to April 2010.

Later, from January to May 2017, she helped organize a special program. This program was about analytic number theory. It took place at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute.

Chantal David's Amazing Discoveries in Math

Chantal David's research helps us understand numbers better. She has made several important discoveries in her field.

Unlocking Secrets of Numbers

In 1999, Professor David worked with another mathematician, Francesco Pappalardi. They published a paper that made a big step forward. They showed that a math idea called the Lang–Trotter conjecture is true in most cases. This helps us predict how often certain patterns appear in numbers.

She also studies special math objects called zeta functions. She has shown that for many families of curves, the "zeroes" of these functions match up with other math ideas. These are known as the Katz–Sarnak conjectures.

Using Randomness to Understand Curves

Professor David uses a field called random matrix theory in her work. She uses it to study the zeroes in families of elliptic curves. This helps mathematicians understand how these curves behave.

She and her team have also found something new about elliptic curves. They discovered a new "Cohen–Lenstra phenomenon." This helps explain patterns in groups of points on elliptic curves.

Awards and Honors for Chantal David

Chantal David's hard work and discoveries have been recognized.

In 2013, she received the Krieger-Nelson Prize. The Canadian Mathematical Society gives this award to outstanding women in mathematics. It shows how much her contributions are valued.
