Chapel Hills Mall is a large shopping center located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, United States. It has over 560,000 square feet of space, making it a big place to explore. You can find many different stores and even a movie theater here. Some of its main stores, called "anchors," include Dillard's, Macy's, Dick's Sporting Goods, and a big AMC movie theater with 13 screens.

A Look Back: The Mall's History

Chapel Hills Mall first opened its doors in 1982. Over the years, it has been updated and changed to keep up with new trends. Major renovations happened in 1985 and again in 1998.

Early Days and Fun Additions

The 1998 renovation brought some exciting new features to the mall. These included an ice skating arena and even a climbing wall! A popular bookstore, Borders Books & Music, also opened, along with a department store called JCPenney. The space that JCPenney used to be in was originally home to another store called Service Merchandise.

However, some of these fun additions didn't last forever. The climbing wall closed down in 2005. Then, in late 2006, the ice arena was closed to make room for a new Dick's Sporting Goods store. In September 2006, Macy's took over the spot where a store called Foley's used to be. Foley's was originally a store named Joslin's. Dick's Sporting Goods officially opened its large store in 2007. That same year, Burlington Coat Factory moved into the space previously occupied by Mervyn's.

Changes in Ownership

For many years, the mall had the same owner. But in June 2011, Chapel Hills Mall changed hands for the very first time. A company called General Growth Properties decided to sell the mall. A partnership between Coyote Management LP and Garrison Investment Group bought the mall.

Then, in April 2018, the mall's ownership changed again. It was bought by the Namdar Realty Group. This company also owns The Citadel, which is another shopping mall in Colorado Springs.

Big Stores Come and Go

Like many malls, Chapel Hills Mall has seen some big stores close over the years. On January 15, 2014, it was announced that JCPenney would be closing its doors. The store officially closed on May 21, 2014.

Later, on December 28, 2018, another major store, Sears, announced it would be closing. Sears closed its location at the mall in March 2019. There was also a Kmart store at this mall that closed in 2009. That Kmart building was later taken down to make way for a movie theater, which is now an AMC Theatres.

In January 2020, Burlington Coat Factory also closed its store at the mall. This left Dick's Sporting Goods, Dillard's, and Macy's as the main "anchor" stores.

What's Next for the Mall?

In July 2020, plans were announced for a new apartment complex right next to the mall. The old Sears building was set to be taken down to make space for this new development. This also meant that some of the mall's parking lot would become smaller.
