Charity is a small but important village in Guyana. It is located in the Pomeroon-Supenaam Region No.2. This area is part of the Essequibo County. Charity is known for its busy market and as a gateway to other parts of Guyana. It is also home to a unique five-story building. The local government helps manage the village.

Charity has a recently built Magistrate’s Court. The St Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church is also in Charity. A local businessman, Alfro Alphonso, built Charity’s only five-story structure. This building is a well-known landmark in the area. Charity also has a fish port. This port buys fish from local fishermen. It then sells the fish to markets in Guyana and other countries.

A Look Back in Time

Charity has a long history! The Dutch first settled this area in 1640. It was part of a colony called Pomeroon. Back then, there was a cotton farm here called Vryden Hope. Later, the farm was left empty. In 1840, people from Portugal came and started a coffee farm.

In 1908, the government of British Guiana bought the land. They began building a road along the coast. A medical center opened in 1928. This center became a hospital in 1935.

The Bustling Charity Market

Every Monday, Charity comes alive with its big market! More than 300 sellers set up their stalls. Most of the fresh produce comes from nearby areas. These include the Essequibo Coast and Pomeroon. Sellers from Georgetown, the capital city, also come to sell their goods.

In 2012, new paved areas were added to improve the market. However, many sellers still prefer to set up on the streets. They believe street spots attract more customers. This causes problems with parking and makes the area crowded.

Because Charity is a busy place, it gets many visitors. This means the village struggles with waste disposal. Too much garbage can block the drainage system. This leads to flooding when it rains.

Location and Travel

Charity is located on the Pomeroon River. This river acts as a gateway to the interior of Guyana. It also connects to Venezuela. Many Guyanese use this waterway to travel. They go back and forth between Guyana and Venezuela for work.

The river is very important for local farmers. They bring their farm products to Charity. From here, the products are sent to other towns. These towns include Anna Regina and Parika. Products also travel to the capital city, Georgetown.
