Sir Charles Broke Vere (born February 21, 1779 – died April 1, 1843) was an important British soldier and politician. He rose to become a Major-General, a high rank in the army. Later, he also served as a Member of Parliament for the Conservative Party, helping to make laws for Britain. His original name was Charles Broke, but he added "Vere" to his surname later in life.

Sir Charles Broke Vere's Life

Sir Charles Broke Vere was born in 1779. His father was Philip Bowes Broke. He also had an older brother, Sir Philip Broke, who became a famous naval officer.

Early Military Career

Charles Broke Vere started his military career early. He fought in a battle called the Battle of Castricum. This was part of the French Revolutionary Wars, a big conflict in Europe.

Fighting in the Napoleonic Wars

Later, he served under the famous Duke of Wellington. This was during the Napoleonic Wars, a series of major wars against France. Broke Vere showed great bravery and skill in these battles. He eventually reached the rank of Major-General, which is a very senior army officer.

Hero at Waterloo

One of his most important moments was at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. This was a huge battle where the Duke of Wellington defeated Napoleon. For his courage at Waterloo, Broke Vere received special awards:

  • The Russian Order of St. Vladimir
  • The Dutch Order of Wilhelm

These awards showed how much his bravery was valued by other countries.

Adding "Vere" to His Name

In 1822, Charles Broke decided to add "Vere" to his last name. So, he became known as Sir Charles Broke Vere.

Serving the King

In 1825, the Duke of Wellington recommended him for a special job. Broke Vere became an aide-de-camp to King William IV. An aide-de-camp is a personal assistant and advisor to a high-ranking military officer or a head of state. He held this important position for twelve years.

A Career in Politics

Besides his military service, Sir Charles Broke Vere also became a politician. He was elected as a Member of Parliament for East Suffolk. He served in the House of Commons, which is where laws are debated and made in Britain. He was a member of the Conservative Party. He served as an MP from 1835 until his death.

His Later Years

Sir Charles Broke Vere passed away in April 1843. He was 64 years old. He is remembered for his dedication to both military service and public life.
