Charles Cameron was a Scottish soldier born in 1779. He lived until 1827. His children later became important people in Australian history.
Charles Cameron's Army Career
Charles Cameron started his army career as a volunteer. In 1799, he became an officer in the 92nd Regiment. He later joined the 3rd Regiment. He rose through the ranks, becoming a captain in 1804. By 1819, he was a lieutenant-colonel.
From 1823 to 1825, he was in charge of Port Dalrymple. This was an important settlement in what is now Tasmania, Australia.
Charles Cameron's Family Life
Charles Cameron's parents were Donald and Catherine Cameron. He was married three times during his life. In 1800, he married Charlotte Euphemia Cameron. After she passed away, he married Mary MacDonnell in 1807. Then, in 1812, he married Luduvina Rosa Da Silva in Portugal.
After Charles Cameron died, Luduvina married Captain John Finnis in Sydney in 1832.
Charles Cameron's Children
Charles and Luduvina had several children together. Some of them became very well-known in Australia:
- Charlotte (1813-1885) married William Hampden Dutton in Sydney in 1831.
- Julia Anne Ludovina (around 1820 - 1846) married Dr George Bennett of Sydney.
- Ewen Wallace Cameron (1816-1876) was also an important figure.
- Luduvina (1824-1851) married (Sir) George Strickland Kingston in 1841.
