Who Was Charles Cameron?
Charles Cameron was born in Paris, France, around 1747. His father, Donald Cameron of Lochiel, was a clan chief who had to leave Scotland. This happened after a big event in 1745 where people supported the Jacobite cause.
Charles first became an officer in the French army. He had two older brothers, John and James. Both of them passed away before him. James died fighting in the French and Indian War. Because his brothers were no longer alive, Charles became the leader of the Camerons. This meant he took on the important role of clan chief.
Charles Cameron's Family Life
In 1767, Charles Cameron married Martha Marshall in Gibraltar. They had a son named Donald Cameron, 22nd Lochiel, who was born in 1769. Donald later became the next leader of the clan.
Charles Cameron's Military Career
Charles Cameron joined a Scottish army group called the 78th Fraser Highlanders. He was allowed to return to Scotland, which was a big deal since his father had been exiled.
In 1776, he was getting ready to travel to America with his company. They were going to fight in the Revolutionary War. However, when he arrived in Glasgow, Scotland, in August, he sadly died very suddenly. To honor him, the bells of the Tolbooth (a historic building) were rung.
