Charles Cheyne, 1st Viscount Newhaven (born October 23, 1625 – died June 30, 1698) was an important English politician. He served as a member of the House of Commons, which is part of the English Parliament, at different times between 1660 and 1698.

Charles Cheyne's father was Francis Cheyne. His mother was Anne Fleetwood. She was the daughter of Sir William Fleetwood. His family lived in Buckinghamshire, England.

Charles Cheyne's Life and Work

Charles Cheyne started his education at Brasenose College, Oxford when he was 14 years old. This was in 1640. Later, in 1642, he studied law at Lincoln's Inn in London.

Becoming a Landowner

In 1644, Charles Cheyne inherited a large property called Cogenhoe in Northamptonshire. Later, in 1657, he bought another big estate. This was the manor of Chelsea in Middlesex, which is now part of Central London. He also bought its main house, Chelsea Place. His wife, Lady Jane Cavendish, helped pay for it with her dowry. He paid for the estate over several years. The total cost was £13,626.

Serving in Parliament

In 1660, Charles Cheyne was chosen to be a member of parliament for Amersham. He served in a special Parliament called the Convention Parliament.

He was elected again in 1669 for Great Marlow. He stayed in Parliament until 1679.

In 1681, he was given the title of Viscount Newhaven. This was a special honor in Scotland.

He continued his political career. In 1690, he was elected for two places: Harwich in Essex and Newport in Cornwall. He chose to represent Harwich until 1695. After that, he was elected for Newport in 1695 and served there until he passed away.

Death and Burial

Charles Cheyne passed away at the age of 72. He was buried at Chelsea Old Church on July 13, 1698. There is a monument on the church wall that remembers him and his first wife, Lady Jane Cavendish. She had given a lot of money to help the church.
