Charles John Colville, 1st Viscount Colville of Culross (born 23 November 1818 – died 1 July 1903) was an important British politician and nobleman. He was known as The Lord Colville of Culross for many years. He belonged to the Conservative Party and also worked for the Royal Family.
Early Life and Education
Charles John Colville was the son of General Charles Colville. His grandfather was John Colville, the 8th Lord Colville of Culross. Charles went to Harrow, a famous school in England.
Political and Royal Career
Colville started his career in the military. He served as a captain in the 11th Hussars, a cavalry regiment.
In 1849, he became the Lord Colville of Culross after his uncle passed away. Two years later, in 1851, he was chosen to represent Scotland in the House of Lords. This meant he could help make laws for the country.
He worked for the government in several roles. He was a Chief Equerry and Clerk Marshal twice, from 1852 to 1852 and again from 1858 to 1859. He also served as Master of the Buckhounds from 1866 to 1868. This role involved managing the royal hunting dogs. In 1866, he became a member of the Privy Council, a group of advisors to the King or Queen.
Later, he worked closely with the Royal Family. He was the Lord Chamberlain to the Princess of Wales from 1873 to 1901. When she became Queen Alexandra in 1901, he continued to serve her until 1903.
Other Important Roles
Beyond politics, Colville was involved in other big organizations. He was the Chairman of the Great Northern Railway Company from 1872 to 1895. This was a major railway company in Britain. He also served as a director for the Central London Railway when it opened in 1900. This railway later became part of the London Underground. He was also the President of the Honourable Artillery Company.
He received several special honors during his life. In 1874, he was made a Knight of the Thistle. This is a very high honor in Scotland. In 1885, he was given the title Baron Colville of Culross. Then, in 1902, he received an even higher honor. He was made Viscount Colville of Culross as part of the 1902 Coronation Honours celebration.
