Charles Diehl (born January 19, 1859 – died November 1, 1944) was an important French historian. He was born in Strasbourg. Charles Diehl was a leading expert on Byzantine art and Byzantine history. The Byzantine Empire was a powerful empire that lasted for over a thousand years.

About Charles Diehl

Charles Diehl studied at a famous school called the École Normale Supérieure. Later, he taught classes about Byzantine history at the Sorbonne in Paris. He was also a member of important French schools in Rome and Athens. In 1910, he became a member of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres, which is a group of scholars. He was even chosen as its president in 1921. He passed away in Paris.

His Impact and Legacy

Charles Diehl's work left a lasting mark. A street in the city of Thessaloniki in Greece is named after him, called Karolou Dil Street. This street is close to the Byzantine church of Hagia Sophia. Charles Diehl helped restore this historic church between 1907 and 1909, making sure it was preserved for the future.

Awards and Recognitions

Charles Diehl received many awards and honors for his important work. He was given special degrees from universities like Harvard University and the University of Belgrade. He also won several prizes, including the Grand Prix of the Académie Française in 1944. He was recognized as a member of several important academic groups, such as the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres and the Medieval Academy of America. In 1939, he received a very high honor called the Grand officier of the Legion of Honour.
