Early Life and Education

Charles Edward Munroe was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This was on May 24, 1849. He went to Harvard to study science. He graduated from Harvard's Lawrence Scientific School in 1871.

After graduating, he worked as an assistant professor. He taught chemistry at Harvard until 1874. Then, he moved to Annapolis. There, he became a chemistry professor at the United States Naval Academy.

Discovering the Munroe Effect

In 1886, Munroe joined the Naval Torpedo Station. This station was in Newport, Rhode Island. While working there, he made a big discovery. He found what is now called the Munroe effect.

The Munroe effect explains how explosives can be shaped. This shaping makes their force much stronger in one direction. This idea became the basis for modern shaped charges. These are special explosives used in many ways.

Leading Chemistry at George Washington University

From 1892 to 1917, Munroe was a key leader. He became the head of the chemistry department. This was at the Columbian University. The university later changed its name. In 1904, it became George Washington University.

During this time, he also led the graduate studies faculty. He earned a Ph.D. in 1894. Later, he received an LL.D. in 1912. In 1898, he helped investigate a gas explosion. This happened at the Capitol building. He used his knowledge of explosives to find out what happened.

Later Career and Achievements

In 1919, Charles Munroe became a professor emeritus. This means he retired but kept his title. He was also dean emeritus of graduate studies. He held these roles until he passed away.

Munroe wrote over 100 books. Most of these books were about explosives and chemistry. In 1900, he was given a special honor. The Swedish Academy of Science asked him to nominate someone. He helped choose a candidate for the Nobel Prize in chemistry.

He also served as president of the American Chemical Society in 1898. He was a trusted advisor for the U.S. government. He worked with the United States Geological Survey. He also advised the United States Bureau of Mines.
