Private Charles F. Cleveland (born August 14, 1845 – died February 29, 1908) was an American soldier. He fought bravely in the American Civil War. Cleveland received the country's highest award for courage, the Medal of Honor. He earned this award for his actions during the Battle of Antietam in Maryland on September 17, 1862. He was given this special honor on June 12, 1895.

Charles F. Cleveland: A Hero's Story
Early Life and Joining the War
Charles F. Cleveland was born in Hartford, New York, on August 14, 1845. His parents were Daniel Cleveland and Alameda Dickinson Cleveland. Before the war began, he worked as a carpenter in Utica, New York.
When the Civil War started, Charles decided to join the army. He became a soldier in the 26th New York Infantry regiment.
Bravery at the Battle of Antietam
On September 17, 1862, Charles Cleveland showed incredible bravery. This was during the fierce Battle of Antietam. His regiment was fighting hard.
During the battle, the soldier carrying the regiment's flag (called the color bearer) was shot. The flag was very important to the soldiers. It showed their unit's pride and position.
Without hesitation, Cleveland bravely stepped forward. He picked up the fallen flag. He then carried it for the rest of the battle. This act of courage earned him the Medal of Honor. He was also wounded during this battle. However, he returned to his unit within two months.
Life After the War
After the Civil War ended, Charles Cleveland went back home to Utica, New York. In 1874, he joined the police force. He worked hard and moved up through the ranks.
In June 1898, he was promoted to Chief of Police. He served as the head of the police department until he passed away. Charles F. Cleveland died on February 29, 1908. He is buried at the Forest Hill Cemetery in Utica, New York.
Cleveland married Catherine Teresa in 1865. They had four children together.
