Becoming Its Own Town

In 1793, Hartford officially became its own separate town, splitting off from Westfield. The area that became Westfield was once claimed by Vermont, but eventually, it became part of New York. Many of the first people to settle in Hartford came from New England. They often bought land that was part of the original patent.
