Sergeant Charles Graham Robertson was a very brave English soldier. He was awarded the Victoria Cross (VC). This is the highest and most important award for bravery. It is given to soldiers who show amazing courage against the enemy. He also received the Military Medal (MM).

Charles was born on July 4, 1879. He first served in the Imperial Yeomanry. This was during the Second Boer War in South Africa. Later, he joined the Royal Fusiliers.

A Hero in World War I

Charles showed incredible bravery during World War I. He was 38 years old at the time. He was a Lance-Corporal in the 10th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. His heroic actions happened on March 8 and 9, 1918. This was near Polderhoek Chateau in Belgium.

His unit was attacked very strongly by the enemy. Charles fought them off bravely. He then realized he might be surrounded. He sent for help, but stayed at his post. He kept firing his Lewis gun with just one other soldier. They stopped many enemy soldiers from getting through.

No help arrived for Charles. So, he had to pull back to a safer spot. He then climbed onto a wall with a friend. He set up his gun again and kept firing. His friend was killed almost immediately. Charles was also badly wounded. Even so, he managed to crawl back to safety. He brought his gun with him, even though he had run out of bullets.

Later Life and Medals

Charles Graham Robertson also served in the World War II. He was part of the Home Guard. This group helped protect Britain during the war. He passed away on May 10, 1954, at the age of 74.

His Victoria Cross medal is very special. It is now on display at the Royal Fusiliers Museum. This museum is located in the famous Tower of London in England. His wife gave his medals to the museum in 1977.
