Charles L. Barrell (born August 1, 1842 – died April 18, 1914) was an American soldier. He served bravely during the American Civil War.
Barrell received the Medal of Honor. This is the highest award for bravery a soldier can get in the United States. He earned it for his actions near Camden, South Carolina, in April 1865. He was given this special award on May 14, 1891.
Life and Military Service
Charles L. Barrell was born on August 1, 1842. His birthplace was Conquest, New York. His parents were Joseph Barrel and Emily Carey.
When he was 20 years old, Charles joined the army. This was on August 2, 1862. He enlisted in Leighton, Michigan.
He became part of Company C. This unit was the 102nd U.S. Colored Troops. He started as a flag holder. He later became a First Lieutenant on January 3, 1863.
Charles L. Barrell passed away in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He is buried at Hooker Cemetery in Wayland, Michigan.
