Charles Landon Knight (born June 18, 1867 – died September 26, 1933) was an American lawyer and newspaper owner. He also served in the United States House of Representatives for Ohio from 1921 to 1923. His sons later grew his newspaper business into a huge company called Knight Ridder.

Charles Knight's Early Life

Charles Landon Knight, often called "C.L.", was born near Milledgeville, Georgia. He went to Vanderbilt University and finished in 1889. After that, he studied law at Columbia University Law School, graduating in 1890. He became a lawyer in 1892 and started working in Bluefield, West Virginia.

Career in Journalism and Politics

In 1896, Knight began working for the Philadelphia Times newspaper. He stayed there until 1900. A few years later, in 1903, he bought his own newspaper, the Akron Beacon Journal, in Akron, Ohio.

Charles Knight was known for having strong opinions on important issues of his time. He was a delegate for Ohio at the Republican National Convention in both 1916 and 1924. These conventions are where political parties choose their candidates for president.

He was elected to represent Ohio's 14th District in the United States House of Representatives. He served in this role from 1921 to 1923. In 1922, Knight tried to become the Governor of Ohio, but he was not successful.

Charles Knight's Family

Charles Knight married Clara Irene Shively on November 22, 1893. Clara was from Shenandoah, Pennsylvania. They had two sons together: John Shively Knight and James Landon Knight.

Lasting Legacy

Charles Knight passed away in 1933 and is buried in Akron, Ohio. His son, John S. Knight, took over the Akron Beacon Journal newspaper after his father's death. John and his brother, James L. Knight, worked together to greatly expand their family's media businesses.

To honor their father, the brothers started the Knight Memorial Education Fund in 1940. This fund helped college students from the Akron area with financial aid. Later, in 1950, this fund became part of the new John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. This foundation is dedicated to supporting journalism and related causes.
