Who Was Charles Powell Adams?

Charles Powell Adams was born on March 3, 1831. Before he became a soldier, he worked as a doctor. He also got involved in politics. In 1856, he was chosen to be part of the Minnesota territorial government.

Fighting in the Civil War

When the American Civil War began in 1861, Charles Adams joined the Union Army. He started as a Captain in the 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment. This was a group of soldiers from Minnesota.

He quickly showed his leadership skills. He was promoted to Major in October 1861. Less than a year later, he became a Lieutenant Colonel.

The Battle of Gettysburg

One of the most famous battles he fought in was the Battle of Gettysburg. This was a very important battle during the Civil War. Charles Adams and the 1st Minnesota Infantry were in the thick of the fighting. During the battle, he was wounded by three cannonballs. He was fighting right next to another brave officer, Colonel William J. Colvill.

After Gettysburg

After his time with the 1st Minnesota Infantry ended in May 1864, he didn't stop serving. He joined a new group called Hatch's Battalion, Minnesota Volunteer Cavalry. Here, he was a Major again. This cavalry unit worked to protect settlers from Native American attacks in the Northwest.

For his brave service, he was given a special honor. On September 5, 1864, he was given the honorary rank of Brigadier General. This is called a "brevet" rank. He officially left the army on June 22, 1866.

Later Life and Legacy

Charles Powell Adams passed away on November 2, 1893, in Vermillion, Minnesota. He was buried in Hastings. He is remembered as a dedicated doctor, politician, and a courageous soldier who served his country during a difficult time.
