Charles Paul Rettig (born November 18, 1956) is an American lawyer. He served as the head of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in the United States. This role is called the Commissioner of Internal Revenue. The IRS is the government agency that collects taxes from people and businesses. Chuck Rettig was the Commissioner from October 1, 2018, until November 12, 2022.

Education and Early Life

Chuck Rettig grew up in California. He went to El Camino Real High School. After high school, he studied economics at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

He then went to law school at Pepperdine University. He earned a law degree there. Later, he got another advanced law degree in taxation from New York University.

Career as a Lawyer

For more than 36 years, Rettig worked at a law firm in Beverly Hills, California. This firm helped people and companies with their taxes. They made sure everyone followed the tax rules.

Rettig also held important positions in groups for tax lawyers. He was the President of the American College of Tax Counsel. He also led the Taxation Section of the State Bar of California. He helped organize a yearly tax conference at UCLA.

In 2010 and 2011, the IRS asked Rettig to lead a special group. This group was called the IRS Advisory Council (IRSAC). Its job was to help the IRS by sharing ideas from the public.

In California, Rettig was part of the California Franchise Tax Board Advisory Board. He was recognized as a specialist in tax law. He was also a specialist in planning for estates and trusts.

Leading the IRS

On February 13, 2018, President Donald Trump nominated Rettig to lead the IRS. The United States Senate had to approve him for this job. During his hearing, Rettig promised that the IRS would be fair to everyone.

The Senate approved his nomination on September 12, 2018. He officially started his job as Commissioner on October 1, 2018.

As Commissioner, Rettig oversaw the IRS. The agency faced some changes in its budget and staffing. He continued to lead the IRS even when President Joe Biden took office.

In May 2021, a news organization called ProPublica published information about the taxes of some very wealthy people. Taxpayer information is usually private. Rettig said the IRS would investigate how this private information was shared.

Relationship with the Trump Administration

Before he became IRS Commissioner, Rettig wrote an article in Forbes magazine. In the article, he discussed why President Trump chose not to share his tax returns.

When he was nominated, some people criticized Rettig. This was because he owned property in a hotel that had the Trump name. He had listed the properties on his forms but did not say they were at a Trump-branded hotel at first.
