Charles Ulysses DeBerry (born April 21, 1910 – died October 11, 1969) was an important American football coach. He is remembered for his time coaching at North Carolina A&T State University. DeBerry also played many sports when he was a student. Later in his life, he became a leader in physical education.

Early Life and College Sports

Charles DeBerry was born in Greensboro, North Carolina. He grew up there and later attended North Carolina A&T State University. While at North Carolina A&T, he was a very talented athlete. He played four different varsity sports for the university. These sports included football, basketball, baseball, and track. Playing multiple sports showed his amazing athletic skills.

Coaching Career at North Carolina A&T

DeBerry became the head football coach at North Carolina A&T University. He coached the team from 1942 to 1944. During his time as coach, his teams played 21 games. They won 10 games and lost 11. One of his most successful seasons was in 1943. That year, his team had an impressive record. They won 7 games and did not lose any. This was a great achievement for the team.

Later Career and Legacy

After his coaching years, Charles DeBerry continued to work in education. He became the chair of the physical education department. This was at Winston-Salem State University. In this role, he helped guide students and programs. He focused on the importance of physical activity and health. Charles DeBerry passed away on October 11, 1969. He died in his hometown of Greensboro, North Carolina. He is remembered for his contributions to sports and education.
