Charles W. Brouse (born December 30, 1839 – died October 26, 1904) was an American soldier. He is remembered for his bravery during the American Civil War. He received the Medal of Honor, which is the highest military award in the United States.
A Soldier in the Civil War
Charles W. Brouse joined the army during the American Civil War. This war was fought between the northern states (the Union) and the southern states (the Confederacy) from 1861 to 1865. Brouse became a Captain in Company K of the 100th Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He started his service on September 24, 1862.
The Battle of Missionary Ridge
Captain Brouse showed great courage during the Battle of Missionary Ridge. This important battle happened in Tennessee on November 25, 1863. It was a major victory for the Union army. Brouse's actions during this battle were very brave.
Receiving the Medal of Honor
Because of his heroic actions at Missionary Ridge, Charles W. Brouse was awarded the Medal of Honor. This special award is given to members of the U.S. armed forces who show extreme bravery. He received this medal on May 16, 1899, many years after the war ended. Captain Brouse left the army on January 16, 1865, due to a disability.
