Charles Zachary Wilson is an American economist. He used to be a professor at UCLA's Graduate School of Education. He was the first Black person to be a top leader (called an Academic Vice-Chancellor) in the University of California System. He also helped start the National Economic Association.
Early Life and Education
Charles Z. Wilson was born in the Mississippi Delta. He went to the University of Illinois. There, he earned two degrees: a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in 1952 and a PhD in Economics and Statistics in 1956.
Later, he continued his studies. In 1959, he learned about Engineering Economics at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He also studied Family Counseling and Management for Entrepreneurs at other universities.
Career Highlights
Wilson started his teaching career at DePaul University's School of Business. After that, he taught at SUNY-Binghamton. At SUNY-Binghamton, he became the first Black full professor on their team.
In 1968, he joined UCLA as a professor. He taught in the Graduate School of Education. In 1970, he became the Vice-Chancellor of Academic Programs. This was a very important leadership role. He held this position until 1984.
From 1985 to 1996, Wilson was the Publisher of Central News-Wave Publications, Inc. This company published one of the largest Black newspapers in the United States.
