The Charlestown Civil War Memorial is a special statue in Boston, Massachusetts. It's also known as the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument. This monument was created by the artist Martin Milmore. It honors the brave men from Charlestown, Boston who fought to keep the United States together during the American Civil War. You can find this important memorial in the Training Field in Charlestown.
About the Memorial
This memorial is made from a strong stone called granite. It was designed in 1871 and officially dedicated in 1872. The sculpture is about 12 feet tall, 9 feet wide, and 8 feet deep.
What the Statue Shows
The statue features three main figures. In the middle, there is a female figure who represents Liberty, or freedom. She holds laurel wreaths in both hands. Laurel wreaths are symbols of victory and honor.
Standing below Liberty are two men. One is a sailor, representing those who served in the navy. The other is a soldier, representing those who fought in the army. These figures honor all the men who served.
The entire group of statues sits on a large base. This base is about 18 feet long, 13 feet wide, and 13 feet tall.
Keeping History Alive
In 1993, the monument was checked as part of a program called "Save Outdoor Sculpture!". This program helps to make sure that outdoor artworks like this memorial are well-cared for and preserved for the future.
