Charlie Bell played high school basketball at Flint Southwestern Academy in Flint, Michigan. He was a talented player even then.
College Basketball Career
Charlie Bell had a great time playing college basketball at Michigan State. He helped his team reach the NCAA Final Four three times in a row. Every year he played there, he was named Michigan State's Defensive Player of the Year. He was a starter for the Spartans when they won the National Championship in 2000.
Professional Playing Career
Even though Charlie Bell wasn't chosen in the NBA draft, he signed with the Phoenix Suns in July 2001. He played five games for them. After leaving the Suns, he played a few games for the Phoenix Eclipse in the ABA. He then signed with the Dallas Mavericks in January 2002, but only played two games for them.
After a short time in the NBA, Bell moved to Europe to play in the Italian and Spanish basketball leagues. He became a star player there. In March 2002, he joined Benetton Treviso in the Italian League and helped them win the championship.
In the 2002–03 season, he played for Virtus (Kinder) Bologna. He got injured in December 2002, which kept him from playing for most of that season. In August 2003, he signed with Mabo Livorno, another Italian team.
In July 2004, he moved to the Spanish League and played for Leche Rio Breogan Lugo. He was so good that he was named to the All-Spanish League First Team for the 2004–05 season. He was also the top scorer in the Spanish league and was named Spanish League Player of the Month three times.
Bell returned to the NBA and signed with the Milwaukee Bucks for the 2005–06 season. On March 28, 2006, he had one of his best games ever. He achieved his first career triple-double (getting double-digit numbers in three different stats: points, assists, and rebounds). He scored 19 points, had 13 assists, and 10 rebounds in a win against the Suns.
In that 2005–2006 season, Bell played in 59 games for the Bucks. He averaged 8.4 points, 2.2 assists, and 2.0 rebounds per game. In the playoffs that year, he led the Bucks in scoring in their first game. The Bucks ended up losing the series.
The next season, 2006–07, Bell played in all 82 games. He averaged 13 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists per game.
In September 2007, the Miami Heat offered Bell a big contract. Even though he said he didn't want to play for Milwaukee, the Bucks decided to match the offer, so he stayed with them.
On June 22, 2010, Bell was traded to the Golden State Warriors. He was later released by the Warriors before the 2011–12 NBA season.
Charlie Bell's last NBA game was on February 22, 2011. He played for only 2 minutes in a game against the Boston Celtics. In January 2012, he signed with Pepsi Caserta in Italy.
Coaching Career
After his playing career, Charlie Bell became a coach. On November 3, 2016, he was hired as an assistant coach for the Texas Legends in the NBA Development League. Later, he became an assistant coach for the Iowa Wolves, where he worked for a few years.
