Charlot Salwai Tabimasmas (born 24 April 1963) is a politician from Vanuatu. He used to be an accountant and a political advisor. He served as the prime minister of Vanuatu from 2016 to 2020 and again from 2023 to 2025. He is the leader of the Reunification of Movements for Change (RMC) political party. This party is part of a larger group called the Unity for Change bloc.
About Charlot Salwai
Charlot Salwai was born in 1963 on Pentecost Island. He learned to speak French when he was a teenager. He went to different colleges to get his education certificates. He also studied at Lycée Blaise Pascal in Nouméa.
Salwai is a Protestant Christian. He can also speak some English. In 2017, he attended a conference in South Korea.
His Political Journey
Before becoming Prime Minister, Salwai held many important roles in the government. He served as a Minister for Trade and Industries. He was also Minister for Lands and Natural Resources. Other roles included Minister for Education and Minister of Justice in 2012. From 2012 to 2013, he was the Minister for Finance and Economic Management. He also served as Minister of Internal Affairs.
Salwai also worked as the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee. He was the Leader of the Opposition Whip. He also held the position of Deputy Opposition Leader.
Becoming Prime Minister
On 11 February 2016, Charlot Salwai was chosen as the prime minister of Vanuatu. This happened after the 2016 Vanuatuan general election. In August 2016, he was re-elected as the leader of his party, the RMC.
In late 2016, some members of parliament tried to remove him from office. However, Salwai remained Prime Minister.
In 2020, Salwai and some former ministers faced legal challenges. They were accused of trying to influence other politicians. Salwai was also accused of giving false information.
He went to court in November 2020. In December, he was cleared of some of the accusations. However, he was found to have given false information and received a suspended sentence. This meant he did not have to go to prison.
In September 2021, the President of Vanuatu, Tallis Obed Moses, gave Salwai a special pardon. This pardon allowed him to run for public office again.
On 6 October 2023, Salwai was once again elected as prime minister. This happened after the previous prime minister, Sato Kilman, was removed from office. Salwai served in this role until February 2025.
