The Prime Minister of Vanuatu is the main leader of the government in the Republic of Vanuatu. This important job means they are in charge of running the country.
The role of Prime Minister was created when Vanuatu became an independent country in 1980. Walter Lini was the very first person to hold this position. Before independence, there was a similar job called Chief Minister.
The Prime Minister is chosen by the Parliament. They must also be a member of Parliament themselves. The Prime Minister gets to pick and remove the other ministers who form the Council of Ministers, also known as the cabinet.
So far, 13 different people have served as Prime Minister of Vanuatu. Some of them have held the job more than once!
The current Prime Minister is Charlot Salwai. He is from the Reunification Movement for Change party. He started his current term on October 6, 2023.
Challenges to Leadership
Sometimes, there are disagreements about who should be Prime Minister. These challenges can happen for different reasons. For example, in November 2009, there was a brief period when Edward Natapei was thought to have lost his job. However, the courts decided that he should get his position back.
Another time, in 2011, Serge Vohor was elected Prime Minister. But a court later said his election wasn't fair. This was because he didn't get enough votes from all members of Parliament. So, his time as Prime Minister was declared invalid.
Similarly, Sato Kilman's election in December 2010 was also challenged. A court ruled that the voting process wasn't correct. This meant that for a short time, Vanuatu didn't have a legally recognized government. Eventually, Edward Natapei was put back in charge temporarily. He then helped Parliament elect a new Prime Minister, and Sato Kilman was legally elected for the first time. These events show how important it is for leaders to be chosen fairly.
