The Prime Minister of Vanuatu is the main leader of the government in the Republic of Vanuatu. This person is like the chief executive, making sure the country runs smoothly.
This important job was created when Vanuatu became an independent country in 1980. Walter Lini was the very first person to hold this position. Before independence, there was a similar role called Chief Minister.
The Parliament chooses the Prime Minister. The person chosen must already be a member of Parliament. Once elected, the Prime Minister gets to pick and remove members of the Council of Ministers, who are like cabinet ministers.
So far, 14 different people have served as Prime Minister of Vanuatu. Some of them have held the job more than once.
The current Prime Minister is Jotham Napat from the Leaders Party of Vanuatu. He started his term on February 11, 2025.

Understanding Prime Minister Disputes
Sometimes, there can be disagreements or legal challenges about who is the rightful Prime Minister. These situations show how important it is for the government to follow the rules.
For example, in November 2009, Prime Minister Edward Natapei was briefly told he had lost his seat. However, the courts later said this decision was wrong. So, Mr. Natapei got his job back.
Another example happened with Serge Vohor. He was Prime Minister for a short time from April to May 2011. But the Court of Appeal later decided that his election was not correct. This was because he was not elected by a clear majority of Parliament members.
Similarly, Sato Kilman's time as Prime Minister in late 2010 was also challenged. A court ruled that his election was not done according to the rules for a secret vote. After this, Edward Natapei was briefly put back in charge. The court asked him to arrange a new election for Prime Minister. This led to Sato Kilman being properly elected in June 2011, starting his first legally recognized term.
