Alatoi Ishmael Kalsakau is a politician from Vanuatu, a country in the Pacific Ocean. He served as the Prime Minister of Vanuatu from November 4, 2022, to September 4, 2023. He is also the leader of a political group called the Union of Moderate Parties.
Political Career
Ishmael Kalsakau has held several important roles in Vanuatu's government. In 2005, he worked as a legal advisor for an organization called MCA Vanuatu.
He also served as the Attorney General of Vanuatu. This is a very important legal job, like being the government's chief lawyer. He left this job once to try and get elected to Parliament. When he wasn't elected, he went back to being the Attorney General.
After the 2012 election, Kalsakau raised concerns about how some elections were run. He said there were issues with fairness in how some politicians won their seats. In 2014, he was again appointed as the Attorney General.
In February 2016, he became the Leader of the Opposition. This means he was the main leader of the political parties that were not in charge of the government.
Kalsakau became Prime Minister in 2022. During his time as Prime Minister, he faced some challenges. In August 2023, there was a vote to decide if he should stay in power. He survived this vote by just one vote. However, a court later decided that the vote was successful, and he was replaced by Sato Kilman on September 4, 2023.
