Ishmael Kalsakau has held several important roles in the government of Vanuatu. His career shows how he moved through different positions to become a national leader.
Early Roles and Legal Work
In 2005, Mr. Kalsakau worked as a legal advisor for a project in Vanuatu. This project was part of a bigger international effort to help countries develop.
He also served as the Attorney General of Vanuatu. This job means he was the main legal advisor to the government. He stepped down from this role to try and become a Member of Parliament. After he was not elected, he returned to his Attorney General position. In 2014, he was again appointed as the Attorney General.
Becoming a Leader
After the 2012 general election, Mr. Kalsakau raised concerns about how some politicians won their seats. He suggested that some unfair methods were used to get votes.
In February 2016, he became the Leader of the Opposition. This means he led the group of politicians who were not part of the ruling government. Their job is to question the government and offer different ideas.
Time as Prime Minister
Ishmael Kalsakau became the Prime Minister of Vanuatu in 2022. As Prime Minister, he was the head of the government. In August 2023, he made some changes to his team of ministers. This happened before a special vote called a "confidence motion." This vote decides if the Prime Minister still has enough support from other politicians to lead.
On August 16, 2023, he won the confidence motion by just one vote. However, a court later decided that the motion was successful, meaning he no longer had enough support. Because of this, he was replaced by Sato Kilman on September 4, 2023.
