History of Chattahoochee Plantation
Early Plans for a City
Back in 1961, the area that is now Chattahoochee Plantation was actually made into a city. The idea was to build a really nice neighborhood there. This neighborhood would have fancy houses and a golf club.
Stopping Atlanta's Growth
A few years later, in 1968, something interesting happened. Lawmakers in Georgia decided to make the city of Chattahoochee Plantation much bigger. They made its borders cover almost all of Cobb County. Why? They wanted to stop the big City of Atlanta from growing into Cobb County.
Attempts to Become Independent
In 1989, a nearby area called Sandy Springs wanted to become its own city. They tried to join with Chattahoochee Plantation to make this happen. But this plan, and others like it, didn't work out. A powerful politician named Tom Murphy, who was in charge of the Georgia General Assembly (the state's lawmaking group), stopped the idea.
End of City Status
Chattahoochee Plantation never really set up its own city government. Because of this, its city status was officially taken away in 1995. Today, you can still see markers along the roads that show where the old city limits used to be.
