Chelo Alvarez-Stehle is a talented journalist and documentary filmmaker from Spain and America. She is known for making films that tell important stories. Her work often focuses on human rights and helping women.
She worked in Japan as an editor for a Spanish newspaper called International Press. She was also a correspondent in Tokyo for the Spanish daily newspaper El Mundo. Later, she became famous for her documentary film Sands of Silence. This film won a major award from the Los Angeles Press Club.
Chelo has received special awards for her work. In 2022, she got the "Equality Award Teresa León Goyri" from her hometown, Logroño. This award recognized her efforts as a journalist, writer, and advocate for women's rights. About Chelo
Chelo Alvarez-Stehle was born in Logroño, Spain. Her father, Domingo Álvarez Ruiz de Viñaspre, was a surgeon and a senator. In 2020, she married Mark Stehle, who was an economist and also helped produce her films. They have a daughter named Sangita.
Chelo's Career
Chelo first studied medicine at the University of Navarra and University of Zaragoza. However, she later decided to follow a different path.
Early Career in Japan
In 1991, Chelo moved to Tokyo, Japan, with a special training program. She worked for NHK Enterprises, helping to develop documentary films. She also became the managing editor for International Press en español, which was Japan's first Spanish weekly newspaper.
By 1994, she was working as the Tokyo correspondent for El Mundo, a daily newspaper in Spain. She reported on news from Japan for Spanish readers.
Moving to California
In 1995, Chelo moved to Malibu, California. She continued to write for El Mundo and other magazines like Geo. She focused on social issues and topics important to women.
Chelo also became a certified translator, translating from English to Spanish. She helped translate and edit museum guides for places like the J. Paul Getty Museum. She also edited a Spanish book called Memory and Identity by Pope John Paul II.
Making Films
Chelo has produced and directed several documentary films. These films often highlight important social issues.
Short Documentaries
- In 2006, she made The Power of 2. This short film was about people in Cuba looking for inner peace. It was shown in over 30 countries.
- In 2016, she produced Through The Wall with director Tim Nackashi. This film tells the story of a family separated by the Mexico-United States border. The Guardian newspaper and PBS Digital Studios acquired the film. It won awards, including Best Web Series at the Imagen Awards.
Other Projects
In 2021, Chelo was featured in a book called 100 Making A Difference. This book by photographer John Russo highlights 100 people and organizations doing good in the world. Famous people like George Clooney and Malala Yousafzai were also in the book.
In 2022, a book called Las semillas de Atenea - Historias de Mujeres Brillantes 2 dedicated a chapter to Chelo's work as a documentary filmmaker.
