The Chelyocarpus ulei is a type of palm tree. It grows naturally in the western part of the Amazon rainforest.
About This Palm Tree
The Chelyocarpus ulei is a special kind of palm. It has only one main stem, which can grow from about 3 feet (1 meter) to 26 feet (8 meters) tall. The stem is also quite thin, usually about 1.5 to 3 inches (4 to 7 centimeters) wide.
Its leaves are shaped like big fans. This palm tree loves to live in rainforest areas. You can usually find it in places that are less than 1,640 feet (500 meters) above sea level. It is very common in northern Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.
People in these areas sometimes use this palm tree in an interesting way. They burn its trunk and use the ashes to make salt!
How It Was Named
The Chelyocarpus ulei palm was officially described and named in 1920. It was named by a scientist named Carl Dammer.
