Starting Her Career
Cherie grew up in a country town called Singleton, Australia. She first worked as a journalist. After that, she began her career in film and television.
She worked behind the scenes in many roles. She was a production assistant, a researcher, and a writer. She worked for different companies, including Kennedy Miller.
Early Films and Awards
Cherie's first film was a documentary called God's Girls (1991). It was about the nuns who taught at her old high school. This film won the award for Best Documentary at the Australian Film Institute Awards.
In 1993, Cherie studied scriptwriting. She learned how to write stories for films and TV. She attended the Australian Film Television and Radio School.
In 1995, she wrote and directed a short film called Lucinda 31. This film was shown at festivals in New York City and Brisbane. It was voted the Most Popular Film at the Brisbane Exposure Festival in 1995.

Her film Clubland was a big success. It starred Oscar nominee Brenda Blethyn and rising star Emma Booth. The movie first showed at the famous Sundance Film Festival.
Clubland received standing ovations at Sundance. It was nominated for eleven AFI awards. These nominations included Best Director and Best Actress.
