A Look Back: Chester's History

Why Chester Was Important Long Ago

Chester was first planned out around 1822. For a while, it was the main town, or "county seat," for Meigs County. This meant it was where the county government and important offices were located.

However, in 1841, the county seat moved to a different town called Pomeroy. Even though it's no longer the county seat, the historic Old Meigs County Courthouse still stands in Chester. This old building is so important that it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Chester has also had a working post office since 1823, helping people send and receive mail for a very long time!
