Chevy Woods' Music Journey
Starting Out in Music (2003–2010)
Chevy Woods began rapping when he was a child. He would rap with his friends, using music without singing as a background. After finishing high school, he went to Robert Morris University. He was an athlete there, but his love for rapping grew even stronger.
Woods decided to take music seriously after meeting another artist who made and shared his own mixtapes. He wanted to do the same! So, he started writing and rapping, using the name Kev Tha Hustla.
In 2004, he met Wiz Khalifa, another rapper from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They met through music producers named I.D. Labs. Woods and Khalifa became partners, and this led to them forming the group Taylor Gang in 2008.
Chevy Woods released his first two mixtapes, The Corner's Correspondent in 2008 and Animal in 2009. These mixtapes included songs with Wiz Khalifa, Boaz, and other artists from Heavy Hustle Records. Most of the music was created by I.D. Labs and Sledgren. In 2010, Woods was also featured on a song called "Paper Route" from Mac Miller's mixtape K.I.D.S..
New Music and Collaborations (2011)
In March 2011, Woods released his fourth mixtape, Red Cup Music. This mixtape featured other artists like Juicy J and French Montana. The music was produced by ID Labs and Mac Miller. Woods told MTV that Red Cup Music helped him find his own unique style. He described it as "laid-back, cool music."
In April 2011, Wiz Khalifa released the music video for his song "Taylor Gang." This song became a special bonus track on Khalifa's first studio album, Rolling Papers. "Taylor Gang" reached number 22 on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart. In April 2013, Wiz Khalifa went on tour to support his Rolling Papers album. Chevy Woods and Big Sean joined him on this tour. This helped Chevy Woods become known to more people who listened to mainstream music.
In August 2011, Woods released a mixtape called The Cookout, which featured Wiz Khalifa. After Wiz Khalifa officially started Taylor Gang Records, Chevy Woods quickly became one of the first artists to join the label. The Cookout mixtape was released in September 2011. It had music produced by ID Labs, Sledgren, Cardo, Key Wane, and Big Jerm. Wiz Khalifa was featured on eight of the eleven songs.
The Gangland Series and More (2012-2015)
In 2012, Woods released a new mixtape called Gangland. The songs on this mixtape were inspired by his early life and a TV show called Gangland. In May 2012, Chevy Woods, along with other Taylor Gang artists like Lola Monroe, Juicy J, and Wiz Khalifa, were featured on the cover of The Source magazine.
Gangland was released in June 2012. It featured music produced by Lex Luger, I.D. Labs, Cardo, Sonny Digital, Key Wane, Sledgren, and Harry Fraud. Other artists like Soulja Boy, Trae Tha Truth, and Young Jerz also appeared on the mixtape. A review in XXL magazine said that Chevy Woods had been getting better with each new release. They noted that he could "fly high" on his own, without always needing Wiz Khalifa.
After Gangland came out, Woods started working on his next mixtape and his first studio album. He went on the first Under the Influence of Music concert tour in July and August 2012. He toured with Khalifa, Mac Miller, Schoolboy Q, and Kendrick Lamar to promote Gangland. He also toured with the rest of Taylor Gang Records on the 2050 Tour from October to December 2012. During this tour, Woods announced that his next mixtape would be called Gangland 2.
In August 2013, Woods shared that his first album would have music produced by Sledgren and C4. He also said that the songs for Gangland 2 were ready and that DJ Drama would host it. Woods showed the cover art for Gangland 2 in September 2013. He then toured North America with Ab-Soul, The Underachievers, and Pro Era on The Smoker's Club tour in late 2013.
Woods released Gangland 2 in October 2013 through Taylor Gang Records. This mixtape included guest appearances from Wiz Khalifa, Juicy J, Trinidad James, Young Scooter, King Los, and Compton Menace. In April 2014, Woods released his first single for sale, "30 Deep." In September 2014, he announced he would release an EP (a shorter music project). He also appeared on two songs on Wiz Khalifa's album Blacc Hollywood. Woods toured with rapper Kevin Gates in July and August 2014.
In January 2015, Woods released Gangland 3, the third part of his Gangland series. It featured music from Ricky P, Zaytoven, Sonny Digital, Ty Dolla Sign, and more. In August 2015, Woods released The 48 Hunnid Project, which was his first music project sold in stores. This project was named after the neighborhood where Woods grew up. It took 12 years to create and shared his experiences from childhood to adulthood. He also toured with Wiz Khalifa on the Boys of Zummer Tour with Fall Out Boy.
