Fershgenet Melaku (born October 23, 1986), known as LoLa Monroe, is an American rapper and actress. She was also known as Angel Melaku before.

Early Life and Beginnings
Fershgenet Melaku was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She grew up in Washington, D.C., in the United States. LoLa Monroe started writing poems and songs when she was 12 years old.
LoLa Monroe's Career Journey
Starting as an Actress and Model
LoLa Monroe began her career as an actress. Her first movie role was in Queen of Media. She also appeared in the film Crazy like a Fox.
She also worked as a model. She was in music videos for famous artists like Kanye West and Trey Songz. In 2007, she chose the name LoLa Monroe. This name was inspired by the famous actress Marilyn Monroe.
Releasing Music and Gaining Recognition
LoLa Monroe released her second mixtape, The Lola Monroe Chronicles: The Art of Motivation, in October 2009. Later that year, she also released a mixtape called Untouchables. This was a collaboration with another artist, Lil Boosie.
In September 2010, she released "Overtime." This was the first single from her mixtape. The music video for "Overtime" was shown on the TV show 106 & Park. In December 2010, LoLa released her fourth mixtape, Batteries Not Included.
Her talent was recognized when she was nominated for Best Female Hip Hop Artist. This was at the BET Awards of 2011.
Working with Taylor Gang
In October 2011, LoLa Monroe was announced as the first female artist to join Taylor Gang Records. This was a record label. Her first mixtape with them was supposed to be Lipstick & Pistols. After some delays, it was released on October 23, 2013.
Later, in September 2013, LoLa Monroe and producer Cardo left Taylor Gang. LoLa Monroe later said that she had never officially signed with the label.

Many artists have inspired LoLa Monroe's music style. Some of these include Jay-Z, MC Lyte, Trina, Salt-n-Pepa, Lauryn Hill, and Tupac Shakur.
LoLa Monroe's Personal Life
On December 25, 2012, LoLa Monroe shared some exciting news. She and rapper King Los were going to have a baby. Their son was born in March 2013.
