Fershgenet Melaku (born October 23, 1986) is an American rapper and actress who is famous for her stage name, LoLa Monroe. She was also known for a short time as Angel Melaku.

Early Life and Background
LoLa Monroe was born in Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia. When she was young, her family moved to the United States, and she grew up in Washington, D.C..
She discovered her love for writing at the age of 12, when she started creating her own poems and songs.
Music and Acting Career
Getting Started
LoLa began her career in entertainment as an actress. She appeared in movies like Queen of Media, a film about the life of Wendy Williams, and Crazy like a Fox.
She also worked as a model and appeared in music videos for famous artists like Kanye West and Trey Songz. In 2007, she decided to focus on her music career and chose the name LoLa Monroe. Her last name, "Monroe," was inspired by the legendary actress and singer Marilyn Monroe.
Rise in Hip Hop
In 2009, LoLa released her first mixtape, which is a type of album that artists often release for free to gain fans. She released two more mixtapes that same year.
A year later, in 2010, she released the single "Overtime." The music video for the song was shown on the popular TV show 106 & Park. By the end of the year, she had released her fourth mixtape, Batteries Not Included. Her hard work paid off when she was nominated for Best Female Hip Hop Artist at the BET Awards of 2011.
Joining Taylor Gang
In 2011, LoLa Monroe joined Taylor Gang, a record label started by rapper Wiz Khalifa. She was known as the "first lady" of the group. She released the mixtape Lipstick & Pistols in 2013 while with the group.
However, in September 2013, LoLa announced that she was leaving Taylor Gang. She later explained that she was never officially signed to the label but had been working closely with them.
Musical Influences
LoLa Monroe has said that her music is inspired by many great artists. Some of her biggest influences include Jay-Z, MC Lyte, Trina, Salt-n-Pepa, Lauryn Hill, and Tupac Shakur.
Personal Life
In 2012, LoLa announced that she and fellow rapper King Los were expecting a child. She gave birth to their son in March 2013.
