The Chiapas pine (scientific name: Pinus chiapensis) is a type of pine tree. It belongs to the plant family called Pinaceae, which includes all pines, spruces, and firs. In Spanish, people call it pino blanco, pinabete, or ocote. This tree was once thought to be just a different kind of pinus strobus (eastern white pine). However, scientists now know it is its own unique species.
Where Chiapas Pines Grow
This special pine tree naturally grows in southern Mexico and Guatemala. You can find it in mountains at heights between 600 and 2,200 meters (about 2,000 to 7,200 feet) above sea level.
Forest Homes
Chiapas pines live in specific places called Central American pine-oak forests. These are forests where pine trees and oak trees grow together. One important area where they thrive is the Sierra Madre de Chiapas mountain range.
How Tall Do They Get?
A grown Chiapas pine can reach impressive heights. These trees often grow to be between 30 and 35 meters (about 98 to 115 feet) tall. That's as tall as a 10-story building!
