The Chichen Itza International Airport (CZA, MMCT) is an airport located in Chichen Itza, Yucatán, Mexico. It is found on the northern part of the Yucatán Peninsula. This airport was built to help tourists visit the famous ancient Mayan city of Chichen Itza.
History of the Airport
Building the airport started in 1999. It officially opened on April 12, 2000. The project cost about 135 million Mexican pesos at the time. This was around US$14.25 million back then.
When it first opened, several airlines were interested in using the airport. These included Aeroméxico, Mexicana, Aerocozumel, and American Airlines. However, these airlines soon stopped flying there.
Why the Airport Isn't Busy
The main reason airlines stopped using the airport was that it was not profitable. This means they didn't make enough money from flights to Chichen Itza. Most tourists visiting the area would first fly to Cancún. From Cancún, they would then travel to Chichen Itza by car or bus. This made it harder for the Chichen Itza airport to attract direct flights.
Today, the airport is mostly unused. It is almost inoperative, meaning very few planes land or take off there. This has also led to a debt of about 27 million pesos (around US$1.45 million).
