The Famous Chicxulub Crater
Chicxulub Pueblo is most famous for being very close to the center of the Chicxulub crater. This huge crater is mostly hidden. It lies under the Yucatán Peninsula and extends into the ocean.
What Caused the Crater?
The Chicxulub crater was made by a giant space rock. Scientists believe it was an asteroid or a comet. This huge impact happened about 66 million years ago. It caused a massive event called the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event.
The End of the Dinosaurs
This event led to the extinction of almost all dinosaurs. Only birds, which are a type of dinosaur, survived. The impact changed Earth's climate and environment very quickly. This made it impossible for many plants and animals to live.
Where is the Crater's Center?
The exact center of the crater is actually near a coastal village. This village is called Chicxulub Puerto. It is in a nearby area known as the municipality of Progreso.
