The Chief Minister of Delhi is the main leader of the government in the National Capital Territory of Delhi. Think of them as the head of the team that runs Delhi. While the Lieutenant Governor is the official head, the Chief Minister holds the real power.
After elections for the Delhi Legislative Assembly, the Lieutenant Governor usually asks the party with the most seats to form the government. The President of India then officially appoints the Chief Minister. The Chief Minister's team, called the Council of Ministers, works together and is responsible to the Assembly. As long as the Chief Minister has the support of the Assembly, their term lasts for five years. There is no limit to how many times a person can be Chief Minister.

Understanding Delhi's Chief Minister
What Does a Chief Minister Do?
The Chief Minister of Delhi is like the captain of a sports team. They lead the government and make important decisions for the people of Delhi. This includes things like managing schools, hospitals, roads, and public services. They work with their team of ministers to make sure Delhi runs smoothly.
How is the Chief Minister Chosen?
When people in Delhi vote in elections, they choose members for the Delhi Legislative Assembly. The political party that wins the most seats in this Assembly usually gets to form the government. The leader of that winning party then becomes the Chief Minister. This process ensures that the Chief Minister represents the will of the people.
A Look at Delhi's Chief Ministers
Early Leaders and Changes
Since 1952, Delhi has had several Chief Ministers. The first was Chaudhary Brahm Prakash from the Indian National Congress party. After his time, the position of Chief Minister was actually stopped for 37 years! It was brought back on December 2, 1993, when Madan Lal Khurana of the Bharatiya Janata Party became Chief Minister.
Longest-Serving Chief Minister
The person who served as Chief Minister for the longest time was Sheila Dikshit. She was also from the Indian National Congress party and held the office for over fifteen years. Her long term shows how much support she had from the people and the Assembly.
Current Chief Minister
Currently, Arvind Kejriwal of the Aam Aadmi Party is the Chief Minister of Delhi. He first took office on December 28, 2013. After a short break, he became Chief Minister again on February 14, 2015, and has been serving since then. His party was the first state-level party to lead the government in Delhi.
When Delhi Had No Chief Minister
Sometimes, if no party can form a stable government, or for other reasons, the President of India can take control of the state. This is called "President's rule". Delhi has experienced this once, most recently in 2015, before Arvind Kejriwal returned to office. During President's rule, the Lieutenant Governor runs the government on behalf of the President.
